The beautiful and manyfold GREAT LAKES DISTRICT of Central Sweden is outstanding worldwide regarding fishing for landlocked Atlantic salmon. Each year thousands of landlocked salmon and lake-run brown trout weighing between 10 and 20 lbs are caught by trollers and spinfishermen in the lakes or by flyfishermen, i.e. in the River Klarälven. Among sportfishermen these species are renown as spectacular high-jumpers and hard-runners.The heaviest rodcaught Gullspång salmon to date, tipped the scale at (39 lb) 17,65 kg, closely followed by two other superfishes weighing (38 lb) 17,2 kg. All three monsters were caught out of Granvik in Lake Vättern. The world´s top ten list for land-locked Atlantic salmon is totally dominated by the salmon from Sweden´s Great Lakes District. This district boasts many deep, cold clear lakes with genuine stocks of huge landlocked char, grayling, whitefish.
Landlocked Atlantic salmon and lake-run brown trout flyfished in the River Klarälv-en have been weighed in to 21 lb, and taken on dry flies up to13 lb. Summertime is excellent fishing time in the River Klarälven.
Spring and late autumn are prime time for trollers, mostly fishing with downriggers. Minnow-imitating plugs as well as flutterspoons are top lures.
